The Mercedes Benz C-class is a car that has been with us from 1993 in various shapes and forms. It’s a bit like a police officer in a tree. In other words it’s always around. Take a drive up to the shops now, and I am willing to bet money you’ll spot one. Chances are you probably know someone that either has or had one. There is a reason for this popularity. This reason is reliability and nonsense-free motoring. People have a perception that a Mercedes just doesn’t brake down, and the majority is correct, if correct maintenance is carried out, the c-class will take you many, many miles as will most German saloons.

C class diesel

The W203 range was in production from 2000 until 2007 and that means you cant buy this model new anymore, however new models of the c-class are out. The W203 range came with a large variety of engine choices ranging from a 1.8L Kompressor to a 5.4L V8. My advice is if you are looking for this generation c-class make sure the mileage is below 100000Km because then it is still in its motor plan and you wont have to take out a loan on a windscreen wiper. Today’s engine range for the c-class goes from a frugal 1.8 Kompressor, like the previous generation, to a monstrous 6.2L V8 that produces 336Kw but costs R729000 (17/11/2008) which excludes any optional extra. If you would like the AMG performance package, that’s a further R55100. Did you see my lotto tickets?

The C220 CDI has a 2.2l 16valve straight 4 unit that produces 110Kw at 4200Rpm and 340Nm of torque at 2000Rpm which is good because the turbo-lag isn’t unbearable. The ride and handling are surprisingly good as well. No it’s not a Lotus Elise but it’s more than capable. The diesel has plenty of power, the car sits very well on the open road and the automatic gearbox works well in delivering the power. The design of the interior is also fresh and modern and has a very distinctive executive feel and that’s exactly who this car is designed for, the executive who wants a bit of refinement and common sense. The W203 generation c-class was built in South Africa and was exported so the quality levels are very good. Aesthetic changes for the facelift (2005 onwards) include: Clear light lenses, a three slat grill, and a bigger mouth in the front bumper.

This c-class, although a bit boring, does have a good image, a luxury feel and as many engines and options as there are seconds in a day. My choice from this generation? The C55 AMG. I know you’ll be making friends at the BP down the road but the noise and power suits me just fine.
